Research and Stories

This is a place where I can share some of my research pertaining to early settlement and family histories intertwined with the story of Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. I’ve been researching and writing for many years and want to make some of my work more widely available.

This blog was originally designed to share my artwork and creative activities during the years when I was exhibiting widely. My art has now taken second place to refining and publishing some of my research, but I have left the art posts available for perusal.

Whatever your interest might be, enjoy, and provide feedback if you can.

The Back Kitchen and Woodshed

The Back Kitchen and Wood Shed While going through some photos I found this photo of the ‘back kitchen and woodshed’ that was attached to the back of the house. I spent many hours piling wood in the woodshed and one of my ‘chores’ was to fill the woodbox in the house with wood from the woodshed. In addition to the ‘back door’, there was a sliding door that was left open in the summer to let the wind blow through. It move on a track and didn’t cover the back opening during the winter so the opening was...

The Dodds & Miller House in Glen Tay

I have committed to getting family stories written this year and am using prompts from a variety of websites to get started. They all seem to suggest starting with ‘your’ story so here goes. I am publishing this ‘stream of consciousness’ rambling in the hope that I can convince others to write about their life story as well. I’m hoping that my relatives from the various families of my tree will take up the challenge. The following is a summary of information researched by my sister Ruth Miller Baker for a school project about 1972. I have...

Diane Miller Duncan – Glen Tay Memories – My Story

I have committed to getting family stories written this year and am using prompts from a variety of websites to get started. They all seem to suggest starting with ‘your’ story so here goes. I am publishing this ‘stream of consciousness’ rambling in the hope that I can convince others to write about their life story as well. I’m hoping that my relatives from the various families of my tree will take up the challenge and forward their story for inclusion in ‘the family story’. Part 1 Who Am I? More than you want to Know! While...

Glen Tay Sawmill

Glen Tay Saw Mill Compiled by Diane Miller Duncan, 2017. To readers of this blog: I am primarily writing from a ‘story’ perspective. For primary sources check out David Taylor’s paper listed below. If you can add more info to any of my posts please contact me. The Glen Tay Sawmill was located north of the Tay River adjacent to the dam. Logs could no doubt have been floated across the river from the wood yard where it would be captured after floating down the river. The original saw and grist mills are believed to have been...

Glen Tay Oat Mill

Capt. Joshua Adams – The Glen Tay Oat and Grist Mills Compiled by Diane Miller Duncan, 2017 The original saw and grist mills at Adamsville are believed to have been built by Abraham Parsall, an early settler, on the north side of the Tay River, Bathurst Concession 2 Lot 20 E1/2. When Parsall died in 1820, Joshua Adams was willed the property and assumed operation of the existing Glen Tay grist mill and saw mill. He did not get clear title to this property until 1834 due to a clerical error in the registry office in Toronto that had...

Dyeing Silk Scarves – with Silk Tie Pieces and Tissue Paper

A week or so ago the Fibre Optics Group experimented with some novel ways for dyeing silk scarves. I love the results! Dyeing with Bleeding Tissue Have you discovered how to use bleeding tissue paper to colour some scarves? I did and love the results. I used the ‘cool’ colour package that has a variety of blues and greens with purple blue as the really dark colour. Experimenting with different ways to use the tissue and to fold the scarf for different effects gave me ideas for use next time. My favorite scarf resulted from a...
