Research and Stories

This is a place where I can share some of my research pertaining to early settlement and family histories intertwined with the story of Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. I’ve been researching and writing for many years and want to make some of my work more widely available.

This blog was originally designed to share my artwork and creative activities during the years when I was exhibiting widely. My art has now taken second place to refining and publishing some of my research, but I have left the art posts available for perusal.

Whatever your interest might be, enjoy, and provide feedback if you can.

A Mystery Quilt – Do I Need to Start Another Project?

Okay!  I’m in rebellion mode today! I have an almost complete website – with some portfolio posts requiring additional attention and more posts to do.  It’s been six weeks or more of  many long days of work.  I should be working on that! I could be doing more hand stitching on my ‘exhibition’ piece that is still under construction and I have two more exhibition piece commitments to go… There is a box of UFO’s that I promised myself  I would tackle this winter… I’ve got three journal...

What Do You Know About Vanity Galleries?

Exhibition Research Continued: In my research regarding art exhibitions I recently stumbled upon a discussion about vanity galleries on the Art Business group on LinkedIn.  It started me thinking about my own experiences and so I went to the blog posting written by Katherine Tyrrell who started this discussion for more information. Katherine defines a vanity gallery as ” one which requires you to pay to show your art. This may involve a fee for each item of art shown or a fee to be shown in their gallery and/or have an exhibition. The...

More Considerations When Planning an Exhibition

Collaboration – A Tool for Increasing Your Audience Continuing from my post of notes made  while reading Anna Hergert’s blog, I turned to Alyson Stanfield’s blog and the first posting that came up was ‘Multiply Your Exhibition Audience with Collaborative Programs.  Right off the bat she provided a list of things that art museums consider when developing their exhibition schedule.  This was of particular interest to me as I have a favorite spot I would someday like to approach in Almonte, ON – The...

Exhibitions – Learning How to Proceed

One of the my groups in Calgary has had some really interesting professional development discussions at the meetings.  We each take a turn hosting and leading a meeting each year.  My turn comes up in March and I’m starting my research. Although I have participated in many group shows and have continued to do so throughout our travel years, I have only had a couple of solo shows and they preceded our travel departure date in 2009 so I need to refresh my thinking on exhibitions and how to proceed. I thought that instead of gathering my...

Art Website Development – Long Hours and Tedious Work

Has anyone noticed my absence? For the past ten days I have been nose-to-grindstone doing the slug-work of cleaning up a blog that was moved from Blogger to a WordPress template and from there into a new ‘made for all gadgets’ template that magically transforms my art website from computer screen to tablet to smart phone format. That involved editing every post and re-entering all the photos so they would be resident on the site with my web site.  Oh did I mention that it involved learning about how ‘categories’ and...

In Search of a Name for a Lichen

I’m in search for the name for a species of lichen found and photographed in the Ancient Forest, an inland wet belt rain forest found in northern BC. along the Yellowhead Highway (Hwy 16).  More information about this site can be found at http://wetbelt.unbc.ca/Inland-Rainforests.htm   It is the subject of my current art piece and I would like to know more about it. A friend has comment that it is one of the many umbilicate lichens – I’m learning new terminology!   I’ve found the following info that seems to...
