Research and Stories

This is a place where I can share some of my research pertaining to early settlement and family histories intertwined with the story of Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. I’ve been researching and writing for many years and want to make some of my work more widely available.

This blog was originally designed to share my artwork and creative activities during the years when I was exhibiting widely. My art has now taken second place to refining and publishing some of my research, but I have left the art posts available for perusal.

Whatever your interest might be, enjoy, and provide feedback if you can.

Stirring the pot…

Stirring the pot…

Today I’m stirring the pot a little more. Over the weekend I’ve had some great conversations with friends from the past and with new FB friends about the Lanark County Junior Farmers. We are all in agreement. We have lost everyone with memories of the early days, we are losing the second generation of alumni and the younger generation is still too busy with life to worry about the early history of the organization. As a result there is a movement to get a few alumni members together and see what we can piece together and what...

Ernest Miller – Perth Junior Farmer

From the Memoirs of J.R. Ernest Miller, Glen Tay, ON My father spent many years documenting family genealogy and was using his third computer before he passed away in 1997 . The family managed to convince him to document some of his life story and the following is a chapter from his memoirs. JUNIOR FARMERS In 1939, a group of young men in their twenties being no longer eligible for 4H and having grown up together felt that they should have an organization where we could continue to advance our knowledge and maintain the fellowship we had...

Origins of Lanark County Junior Farmers

Yes I have been doing art and art things but I’ve been diverted …to one of my other interests, family and community history! Just before leaving for Phoenix I received a phone call – a voice from the past. Alvin wanted me to get in touch with someone who was urgently trying to find out information about the Lanark County Junior Farmers. I delayed in making the requested phone call to Barclay Nap until Wednesday and as a result spent yesterday delving into the history of an organization that intertwines with my family...

Scottsdale – A Travel Interlude

A SOS call from my son led to a fast trip to Scottsdale last week. Surgery was scheduled and the medical team would not proceed until  he organized post surgery assistance. Mom to the rescue! Between 40+ degree temperatures that didn’t moderate much at night and my son’s recovery it was a quiet week. I managed a couple of evening walks in this park and a few shots of flora and skies that I would like to share.         Now back to life in the fast track …

Focus on Fibre Exhibition

I’ve been watching for additional shows to enter and a couple of years ago I had flagged the ‘Focus on Fibre’, a biennial exhibition in Edmonton as a possibility. The 2016 theme ‘My Heritage’ was especially appealing as it fits so well with my current work direction. Over the past couple of years I have been working on a piece ‘just because’ I wanted to, without a schedule or plan for it! It fit beautifully with this theme. Thus ‘Ripples in Time’ came into being! I was...

SAQA Calgary Road Trip Exhibition

Last year a group of Calgary and area Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) decided to meet and share ideas. This gathering resulted in the assembly of an exhibition ‘Road Trip’. The theme was an invitation to share memories or dreams of a road trip. This show was non-juried and limited to new work. It portrays a wide variety of artist styles and interpretations. Earlier this year, this exhibition was shown at the Fish Creek and Crowfoot libraries in Calgary. During the month of August Road Trip will be shown at the High River...
