The Lure of the Open Road, SDA Exhibition, Atlantis Framing, April 2014
Much of my artwork is exhibited in long term traveling exhibitions and as a result I rarely have photos of my work during exhibitions. I get myself so immersed in the creation process that I frequently forget to share my joy when the work becomes available for others to see. Check here to see where you can see my work ‘up close and personal!’ Don’t forget to check out the Fibre Art Network website for current and past exhibitions of work by my sister artists in western Canada.

Last year a group of Calgary and area Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) decided to meet and share ideas. This gathering resulted in the assembly of an exhibition ‘Road Trip’. The theme was an invitation to share memories or dreams of a road trip. This show was non-juried and limited to new work. It portrays a wide variety of artist styles and interpretations. Earlier this year, this exhibition was shown at the Fish Creek and Crowfoot libraries in Calgary. During the month of August Road Trip will be shown at the High River...

I am the third generation to appear in this series and what do I say about this piece and myself? For me the series has been about family traditions and memories and the richness to be gained by passing these on to subsequent generations. In previous posts I have talked about Grandmothers and the legacy they left me, my parents and how they influenced my view of the world. This fifth piece is about the synthesis that occurs when that ingrained influence of the past is combined with the world of today. Creating Me: Diane Duncan 2016 In...

Grandma Bella was a little more of an unknown to me when I undertook this series for the TREX exhibition. Although Grandma and Grandpa Mather were frequent visitors, especially for Sunday evening supper, they did not play as large a roll in my life as Granny Alice. As youngsters, we stayed with these grandparents for short periods during the summers and it was during these stays that I was able to take a few swimming lessons at the Perth swimming pool and actually take proficiency tests that allowed me to collect swimming badges! But,...

I’m looking forward to the opening of a new Alberta travelling exhibition(TREX), The Tie That Binds. This year north central Alberta will be treated to the work of f0ur Alberta fibre artists….. and I was invited to be one of the four! I share this exhibition with Judy Weiss, Edmonton, Margie Davidson, Edmonton, and Matt Gould, Red Deer. Opportunity! I was first approached in early 2015 and I almost couldn’t believe it when it happened! After some correspondence back and forth and a lot of planning and winnowing of ideas, I...

Mended: an Exhibition sponsored by Surface Design Association BC + Yukon While in Vancouver I was thrilled to be able to visit a juried show sponsored by Surface Design Association BC + Yukon: Mended. It did not disappoint. Even my husband enjoyed it! I can’t find my notes written after visiting the show and although I have photos of the artist statement cards I can’t match them to the photos. My apologies! I am sharing just a few of the pieces, an indication of how varied the artwork is. If you get a chance to see this show...

Cherry Blossoms: A Textile Translation I know this is a bit behind the times but as part of my British Columbia travels last spring I visited a number of art galleries and wanted to share some of them with you. One of the first shows I attended was discovered thanks to an alert friend who was keeping tabs on my travels. She knew I was located close to the Silk Purse Gallery near the West Vancouver Seawall. After checking into the RV park we decided to use our bikes to explore and found the gallery very easily. The best part was that the...

One of my goals for 2014 was to apply to as many juried shows as possible. I just heard from the Surface Design Association (SDA) show ‘Edge of the Forest : Exploring Perimeters’ and have yet another piece heading out for travels across Canada. This exhibition features work by Canadian members of the SDA and will open at the: Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts (Ontario) and this show will run from March 1-30, 1915. John M. Parrott Gallery, Belleville, ON, June 4 to July 9, 2015 Fibre Conference/Craft Council of...

Sunday, October 20th, two of my groups came together to hold a ‘pop-up’ art show! For three hours we were able to share some of our work with friends and acquaintances. I’ve limited my photos to ones that mainly feature my work as I haven’t had a chance to ask permission from other members to show their work. However, you can get a peek at the variety of pieces from the more general shots. I’m saving some of the items for focused blogs to be posted later. We were thrilled with the turn out and had lots of...
